I don't have a 1964 model, but the rear axle support struts were 
installed on Imperials built from 1956 through 1966. They are 
illustrated in several years of FSM. They are not discussed in the 
section called Rear Axle. Check the section in the FSM called Drive 
Shaft and Universal Joints. Between 1956 and 1962, they have a tendency 
to break. There were changes to the drive line on 1963 and newer models 
which coincidently reduced this tendency.

Their purpose is to keep the rear axle housing from tipping up and down 
maintaining the correct angle of the rear drive shaft under all driving 
conditions. This angle is set at the factory and can be adjusted by 
adding or subtracting shims from the mounting points of these struts to 
the axle housing, and the mounting of the drive shaft center bearing. 
If this is not set properly, or the struts are not in place, the car 
will vibrate. This can also occur if the car hight is changed or the 
rear springs are replaced with an incorrect arch, and the angle is not 
adjusted to compensate for it.

The automatic headlight dimmer is covered in the 1960 and 1962 FSM's. 
It should also be in the 1964 edition, check the Accessories section.

These stabilizer bars (or strut bars) are not covered in the 1964 
Imperial FSM, nor is the auto-dimmer.  Any ideas where I can find info 
on the auto-dimmer?

Struts are on newer cars - that's a specific word for
a specific part, I am afraid.

Suggest that you look on the site on the Service
Manual for your car first, then email in a link of a
page with a picture in the manual showing what you're
referring to, since there are two leaf springs, two
shocks, and the rear axle on my 64 and not much else
is "springing" to mind.

Later Fuselage cars had elastic isolators to keep the
leaf springs off of the rear-end....

Yah, they are pretty good cars, huh?

all 700 of us think so too.
