[Chrysler300] '63 Chrysler - 6 bolt valve cover gaskets

Hi All,
I purchased NAPA (Fel Pro) VS50145R valve cover gaskets. They are stiffer than the typical rubber gaskets.
These are considered 'premium' on the NAPA website.
Attributes: Product Features:Increased Fluid Sealability. Material:Hi-Temp. Coated Fiber.
http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=FPG&PartNumber=VS50145R&Description=Valve+Cover+Gasket+Set
My problem is the valve covers have never leaked more since I put these gaskets on!
>From the Fel-Pro site, I see they have several material listings, but none have the same wording as the NAPA site.

I used the sticky 'Permatex' material, cranked down the 6 bolts, not too tight to let the gaskets seat correctly.
The service manual torque spec. was probably for 'cork gaskets'? They were easy to compress, but this material is like a 'hockey puck'.
I have continued to torque the bolts down, working across the cover, and now I am almost where I fear I may break off the bolts.
If anyone has used these gaskets or other ones that would work better, please make your suggestions.
I tried to buy a premium product, but it has resulted in poor results.
Before I tear it apart, I would like to hear some advice. Should I just go back to the standard rubber gaskets?
Thank you,
Mark Lindahl
