The short answer is "NO". There is no adjustment. All cable adjustments
are done at the trans end.
As to housing to cable clearance: yes. When I put a 727 into my 56
Dodge, I needed a newer designed cable end at the transmission, of the
correct length to fit my car. So I purchased a repro cable, custom made
length, for my application. I tried several times to adjust the cable,
following the details in the shop manual procedure. Generally, it works
properly, especially when cold. When things are up to the operating
temperature, there are some minor issues. Sometimes Drive doesn't engage
(from Neutral), unless I push the 1 or 2 buttons first, then Drive.
Sometimes Neutral doesn't engage when going from Drive, unless I push
Reverse first. Once Drive engages, all shifts work properly. I have
never had a problem with "incomplete shifts".
By pushing the other button needed to get the trans to engage properly,
the cable is pushing past the desired setting, and then when selecting
the desired button, it is being pulled so slack between the cable and
housing is not an issue.
The term for this issue is "hysteresis". It is caused by excessive cable
to housing clearance. This allows the cable to flex inside the housing
when pushed, so the movement at the transmission end is less than it
should be when pushed, and correct when pulled.

amount of throw (distance) that the cable moves when various buttons
are depressed???
Has anyone ever had a bad shifter cable due to too much slack between
the cable and its housing,,,kind of causing 'incomplete' shifts??
