On an Imperial, - if you want to run an external fuel pump, - you will have
to remove the original in-tank pump. It is too difficult to suck fuel
through it, and the engine will not run if you try to do things that way.
It is not a big deal to replace the in-tank pump with a similiar pressure
(later-model) unit. The hanger & stuff can be modified to accept most any
in-tank pump since the great majority of them are made in a similiar manner
and are available in a variety of pressure & delivery ratings, - so there is
really no reason to have to go with an external pump at all. I hav used
internal pumps with everything from just plain carburetors, - to throttle
body injection conversions, - to multi-port "Magnum" changeovers. All
worked out fine.
