Rick: Of course, you are correct.
As a note of interest, Chrysler also pioneered (one of the first, anyway)
stress analysis on the structural components. Since the Airflow body
represented a form of unibody construction and would be expected to take a
big part of the load, Chrysler naturally wanted to do its homework re its
integrity prior to production.
So they hired a crusty old German professor, an ME presumably, from Wayne
State U, right down the street, to crunch the numbers. And he did, but...he
overestimated the stresses on the body by a factor of two (even after
putting in fudge factors).
No wonder the modern day Airflow collectors marvel over the "tanklike"
structure of their pride and joys...
