Alan;
I believe that I can answer the last two questions about Imperials in
general. The first year for a full automatic in Imperials was late in the
1953 model year which when the two speed Powerflyte was introduced. The last
year for an Imperial with a completely manual transmission was probably
around 1940 or so. If you mean one with a clutch pedal then 1953 would be
the last year. All others in between 1940 and 1953 had some sort of
semi-automatic or clutch free shifting mechanism involved the only one of
which I have encountered was the M6 or Fluid Torque Drive unit. The M6 was
a semi automatic unit where it would shift automatically between gears in a
certain range but where you would need to use the clutch to manually shift
between gear ranges.

Subject: IML: questions for the group
I have a couple of questions for the group about the 74 & 75 Imperial & 76
thru 78 NYB, which I consider to be pretty much the same car.
Was there ever a convertible?
Was there ever a coupe with bucket seats and a floor shift in a console?
What was the Salon?
About Imps in general:
What was the first year for the automatic transmission?
What was the last year for manual transmission?
Thanks.
