IML: True performance

For those really interested in the performance standing of their Imperials, there are a few ways to do this. One is to spend a few hundred dollars for time on a chassis dyno, to check rear wheel HP, or you may chose another, which may be more economicly fessable. That would be a trip to the local drag strip on a Sunday afternoon. Mathematicly speaking, it is possible to calculate the HP by knowing certain things. The real weight of the vehicle, and an approximate HP of the engine. With these two factors, the approximate speed of the vehicle can be calculated(in a quarter mile). The other way is to know the weight, and top speed in the quarter mile, HP can then be calculated. This has worked very well for many of the cars I've tested, some were pretty slow (64 Dodge pick-up slant six manual 3spd) and Hemi Darts, with many in between. A good example was my 77 Plymouth Gran Fury Cop car,(135k miles) with 440 high performance package engine, it weighed 4600lbs, it went 89 mph on the drag strip. Knowing those numbers, the engine was producing about 275 HP. After some minor mods, rear axle ratio,air pump gone,  carb jetting, electric fuel pump, timing and no cat converters, and power steering belt off,  we saw mid 90's, and upper 14's.This showed we had gained about 30-40 HP, judging by the calculations. The average 413-440 would factor out at 260-300 HP. It's just another thing to think about, and besides the hot dogs are good, you meet new people, you turn a lot of heads, and have a blast, for $50 Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.

My 75' imperial 2 door also weighs bout 5,000 lbs. I replaced it's 440 with a 440 interceptor from a 76' CHP car though. could go on and on, but regardless to say that I'm pushin about 450 ponies now, and I'd race a roadrunner or such any day! These cars are built sturdy enough to accomadate allot of muscle. :)

Hi All!....some time back there were a few emails passd back-and-forth about the   0-60 and 1/4 mile times for our not-so-speedy Imperials. I can't seem to find   those emails and would appreciate it if anyone who has those times (with the   year Imperial that did them) I'd appreciate you emailing me a copy for my   records.   I know our 3-ton IMperials wre certainly no match for the 440   Roadrunners/Crargers/GTX's /etc of those times but I do remember some members   saying that the 35-100mph times were not alll that bad! (guess once you got that   6000lbs rolling the 440 did the rest!).  With all the current talk about the high dollars the "Muscle Cars' of the   60-70's are bringing in todays marketplace I often tell people who ask about the   car that since it has a
 440 engine and about 360HP I guess it might be   considered a "LUXURY" muscle car!!! If our IML member ever does get his Imperial   to hit the 200MPH  barrier I guess  (maybe!) we'll get a bit more 'respect'!!!  Anyway, if anyone has, and can email me those statistics (preferrably for my   1966) I'd be very grateful (dansgarage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx).  ...If these stats are somewhere on the website (which is surely a possibility   given the SIZE of the iML site) please give me a hit as to WHERE!
