My '56 Imperial was built on February 14, 1956 and came from the
factory with the three speed automatic Torqueflite transmission. The
two speed Powerflite was used in early production. There seems to be
some confusion to exactly when the change over took place. Once it
occurred, all '56 Imperils had the three speed transmission. I have
looked at over 100 '56 Imperials (both two and three speed models) in
30 years time and NEVER seen one that had a three speed transmission
lurking under the car, while offering the driver a two speed push
button control. Frankly, I don't think that can work as the cables are
not interchangeable. I have seen one 1955 car with a three speed unit
installed, bypassing the Flight Lever, and the pushbutton unit dangling
under the dash to control the movement of the car. It worked, but I did
not consider it to be an ideal situation.

When you face the seller and they boast about the "Hemi". Answer by
saying this is the engine that weighs more than 100 pounds heavier than
an 413. Also reply that NAPA can not get an re-build engine kit for
this engine.
If the car was produced before may of 1956 it had the two speed
Automatic. After May the automatic was the three speed and many folks
did an "retro fit". Even if it has the newer transmission. talk it
down anyway. ( It is possible to have the 2 speed transmission shift
face plate but have the three speed transmission. )
From across the street (max ), you should not hear the exhaust note
from an "running engine".
I have no 1956 Imperial, but I sure would like one.

Are 1956 Imperials in demand? I am driving two hours to look at one
that
runs and will pull itself onto trailer. Freeze plugs leaks
and cannot run long. Supposedly all original and they do not know
model,
etc. I would like to know some values before I make offer and bring
home.
