The finish or color of the Auto Pilot case may not have been paint, but
a chromate plating. Chromate plating deposits a metal finish that is
less durable than chrome plating. There are basically two colors, a
silver and a gold tone. Many of the covers on brake master cylinders
are chromate plated, usually the gold tone. Brake boosters that have a
metal canister look are often chromate finished also usually in the gold
tone color. It deters corrosion for a number of years, but if exposed
to caustic salts or acid it will go bad rather rapidly. There are some
after market paints for automotive use that duplicate the appearance of
the two colors pretty closely if you want to do it yourself. Chrome
plating shops should be able to do a chromate finish if you want to
re-plate a unit. That might have to involve a complete removal of all
inside parts though. The case of the Auto Pilot is probably cast pot
metal like many other items such as the door handles etc. on these cars.
