All '60 Imperials were built in the same plant. The plant began
operation with the 1959 models, and was featured in automotive
magazines at the time. I believe that if you can find a copy of
AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRIES for either June or July 1960, there is an article
with pictures of 1960 models rolling down the assembly line. Production
was stopped mid-June. The beginning number 920 designates the Crown
model, 910 being Custom and 930 LeBaron. There were only about 11,000
1960 Imperials built, with the Crown Southampton Four Door Hardtop
being the most popular model. The statistics are on the OIC web site,
along with various studies regarding the serial and production numbers.
Very late model Imperials beginning in May 1960 were equipped from the
factory with alternators instead of generators. There were lots of
other little changes during production as well, such as the design of
the Emergency Brake release being changed from PUSH to PULL OUT PUSH
DOWN. The Chrysler Historical Society was decoding serial numbers with
respect to date of production and delivery site for a fee, but I don't
know if this is still available. Their contact information is also on
the OIC web site.

Hello Joe,
Two years ago a bought a beatiful 1960 Imperial Crown, it is Alaska
White with a red interior.
To give you an idea, you will find some pics at:

Since I don't know anything about the history of the car (I bought it
at an auction in Sacramento) I was wondering if you can
decode the VIN number for me to provide me with some information about
this car.
The VIN is 9204-116664 , So I guess this car was built in Detroit
(and not in the separate Jefferson plant were all Imperials were
supposed to be built?).
I hope you can give me some extra info with regard to this VIN number,
would be great to know something more about my car!
Many thanks beforehand,
Robert

A serial number issue has showed up. It seems there are 61 Imperials
with the 4th digit either being a 3 or a 4. A 4 means built in Detroit
and a 3 is Jefferson Assembly. Jefferson was to be Imperials and
Detroit was other makes mixed with Imperials. Will be checking further
to confirm as we go.
Also have discovered that a few people were told they had a Crown
and it is a Custom instead according to the serial number. So, when
sending all this info, do a serial as such: example as my 61 LeBaron:
9313-187059. By adding the dash it will help to confuse the theifs if
any, thinking a digit is missing.
I will add info needed inquiries as things proceed to make this
efficient. I will be doing other years, bt at present, I don't want an
overload and I would like to do all the years if possible. joe machado
