You should move the crankshaft with a wrench because the harmonic 
balancer could be slipping. If you still have that much play, yes, that 
is too much delay in the movement of the rotor. The 440 has plastic 
coated timing gears to increase silence. If it has worn off, or the 
timing chain has stretched, there will be too much play. Think about 
the distance the rotor travels to get to the next firing contact inside 
the distributor cap. To much play and the igntion timing cannot be set 
based on the timing marks.

I am trying to determine if there is excess slack in my timing chain on 
my 67 440. I have turned the harmonic balancer back and forth while 
watching the rotor and get about 3/4" of free movement at the balancer. 
Is this considered too much?
