I am one of the members who suggested replacing the backing plate 
assembly, concluding that if it won't stay put during reassembly, it 
could come apart while driving the car. Bob H. is the guy to sell you 
one. Good luck on your new service provider, a faster connection will 
enhance your enjoyment of the OIC! I hope you found a tool that helps 
you "pop" those return springs right into place. It took me dozens of 
attempts over 30 years ago, until I located the perfect screw driver. 
Its just the right one, and the springs pop into place first time every 
time. I will never lose that tool. After seeing your note the other 
day, I went looking for it to make sure it was still in the spot that I 
had left it. It was there, and all is right with the world!! I felt 
like I could sleep that night, and I did just like a baby.

I am still having problems with the Return Spring Link popping out of 
place when I attach the Return Spring to the brake shoe on the left 
front axle of my '62.  I forgot who mentioned it, but someone suggested 
that I may have to get a replacement support plate assembly.  At this 
point I believe they were right.  Although I can knock the Return 
Spring Link back into position, it will not stay there while installing 
the Return Spring.  I even tried wedging a thick screwdriver between 
the upper wheel cylinder and the top of the Return Spring Link, to keep 
the top from riding up as I installed the Return Spring.  The Link 
still popped out at the bottom end.

My conclusion is:  If a Return Spring Link comes out of position while 
installing the Return Spring to a brake shoe it is time to replace the 
support plate assembly.  I tried about 10 times and never got the lower 
end of the Link to stay behind the pin that is supposed to limit its 
travel.  The Link floats in its position but has to stay within certain 
bounds in order to successfully install the Return Spring.

I just received a reply from Bob Hoffmeister indicating that he has a 
replacement support plate assembly.  I will be calling him later today 
to order one.

I will be unsubscribing from IML and resubscribing since I have changed 
Internet Service Provider.  I now have a broadband wireless connection 
by microwave link.  My old dial-up service will soon be terminated.
