If it isn't stuck, the pressure of the exhaust going through will
easily keep it open when the car is running. The main objection would
be to the noise that it makes if it requires servicing/and or some new
parts. Wiring it open is probably a good thing on seldom driven cars,
since being stuck closed is serious, and not being moved for extended
periods is one way that can happen. Still, an occassional squirt of
penetrating oil will keep it free. Functioning, it does help open the
choke properly. On both the 413 and 440 engines the choke spring is
housed in the intake manifold, and requires the heat (in concert with
the choke pull off) to allow it to open.

I did this on my 69 LeBaron. I put a ss hose clamp on the exhaust pipe
just below the valve. The screw part of the hose clamp holds the heat
riser valve open.

Dumb question time:
On a '67 440 (from an Imperial - required
content), looking at it from the passenger's
fender, which way does the heat riser rotate as
it opens? I suspect mine does not work
correctly and I want to wire it open.
