I have never heard that you needed to shift to Neutral between Drive
and Reverse. It sounds like poppycock. When I drove push button
Imperials in the snow, I would frequently alternate between R & D to
"rock" the (non-sure grip) car out of a slick spot. This did no damage
to anything as the engine was at slow idle, and the wheels spun freely
until I got traction. I think I even read in the operators manual that
it was okay to do this.
I haven't been under any of the cars lately to tell you about the
position of the torsion bar in relation to the exhaust. I suspect it
can only go one way.

Subject: IML: Which side of the torsion bar is the exhaust located/
Reverse not engaging when engine is hot?
Imperialists,
As I recall, If I am in drive and I push reverse when the engine is
hot, the same problem happens, the reverse button pushes in, the drive
button stays in, and the transmission stays in drive. I never shift
directly from Drive to Reverse, I shift into Neutral first. I read an
article in Hemmings Classic Car that where the owner of a Chrysler with
a push button transmission said that you should always shift into
Neutral before shifting from Drive to Reverse. Does anyone know if
this is necessary or not?
Also, which side of the torsion bar does the exhaust pipe go? From the
FSM, it looks like the exhaust should be between the frame and the
torsion bar. Right now my exhaust is on the other side of the torsion
bar, real close to the transmission and shifter cable.
Thanks,
