It could also be the timing chain is wearing out. They will cause the
timing mark to jump around.
Did you say you had replaced the entire distributor, shaft and all, or
just the cap and wires and points? I had similar symptoms on a 71 LTD
and it turned out to be worn springs and weights in the distributor that
left it "floating" too much. Under load, it was "pushed" up against the
stops and ran smooth. I thought I saw an earlier post about this where
you said the timing light image was not steady; this would further
suggest something loose in the distributor. --Tom 63 Custom
