I have been following this thread on and off.
I had a 1966 Newport that died one morning.
I went through all sort of trouble shooting and it ended up being a bad voltage regulator.
The good part of this story is that I replaced everything in the ignition and the voltage regulator with modern stuff. I used the opportunity to install a Pertronix I electronic ignition.
The car ran flawlessly for another ten years without a tune up after this!

Well I certainly hope that fixes it for you.
Strange that the coil would be fried, a bad
condenser should not damage the coil. A good
coil will act like it's bad if the condenser is
not working but will work fine again once the
condenser is replaced.
