Rob,
What pollution or inspection? I live in South Dakota, we have practically no
pollution and definately don't have inspections. We used to need a headlight
inspection before we could get our license plates but the state added
everything else on the car to it and they finally eliminated it entirely!!!

Rob,
What would happen if I just removed the front Cat? If I remember
correctly. this has been going on (the stumbling) ever since I bought the
car in 1990. I will also check out the EGR valve.

The front cats are there because the cats, especially earlier ones did not
heat up and start working fast enough. They are smaller and designed to
"light off" more quickly. There should be no driveability problems with
removing them. I believe there are two, one for each side and then they
Y and lead up to the main car. There may be some pollution and inspection
problems with the car if you remove them, depends on your location. You
may be able to get away with an FMJ body y pipe with no cats. You have to
check because the exhaust systems can be different. There are ways to
check if the cat is clogged, but I'm not sure what they are. Something
about the temp of the pipe ahead and behind the cat, and some kind of
pressure test that requires drilling a hole. The FSM has the EGR test in
the pollution control section.
