If you look under the hood of the car you will see the steering column is a
little farther to the left than at the firewall (looking toward the
firewall).
Also note the engine is a little more toward the passenger side and is not
in the centre of the car.
Both were done to provide enough room for the steering gear, with the wide
wheelwells needed for the wide tires taking up more room, and, I beleive,
the torsion bars.
