56 = 1956 model year
11286 = sequential production number, which started at 1001

Thus it was the 10,286th 1956 Imperial off the line.  .

The American-built 1956 Chrysler Windsor was "W56", the New Yorker "N56" and
the 300-B was "3N56",  Windsor and New Yorker czrs built at LosAngeles had
"L" after the "56".

The same layout was used in 1955 with "55" for the model year and again in
1957 ("57" model year).  Tbe Saratoga, brought back for 1957, was "L57".
