I had a similar problem with the 8-track player in my 76 NYB, except 
that mine played too slowly or not at all.  In this case, it was a 
toasted transistor in the tachometer circuit.  As Brad said, these 
stereos are a pain to work on.  A technician will curse the thing (and 
you) greatly while working on it, and will charge you accordingly.  If 
you can find a replacement, that's your best bet, although after 30 
years most of them have some quirk by now.
