IML: oil pump question

I found this on the internet : See the "Tex Smith" book or the Source Table for adapting an "LA" pump, improving oil flow to the bearings, converting to "full-flow" oil filters, converting to spin-on cartridges, etc.

What is an LA pump and what are the modivications needed.
