I would suspect the shift cable also. I don't know if you've had any past 
problems with this or not. My experience is that they don't usually go out 
of adjustment on their own. Usually after it was taken apart is when 
problems occur. Check at the trans to see if the cable is mounted tightly. 
Also, try letting the car warm up a while & then put into gear & see if it 
engages. Sometimes, when the adjustment is off just a little, it will engage 
once it is warmed up. Another thought is, are you certain you have the 
correct trans dipstick?
