I only deal with shops that I trust and will leave my precious car/cars
with. That is so that I know that it will be done right when I get it
back. There are folks who can rebuild and set up the differential
outside of the car, but that is a skill most shops don't have.
Back in 1985, I found a "differential man" in my area. He came highly
recommended, and by folks that I knew were honest. He rebuilt a Sure
Grip for my '65 Imperial, and explained that if it made any sound or
was "too tight" after I installed it, he would like to have the car in
his garage for a day to fine tune things. He was good enough at what he
did that it was right the first time, as I hoped and he knew it would
be. Ever since, I have allowed a reputable shop to do the work start to
finish. I am past the days of changing that part of the car myself. I
drive cars a lot of miles, and I have had to have the differential
rebuilt in two more Imperials, a 1981 Buick, a 1976 Ford Pinto, and a
1980 Lincoln. Each of them turned out perfect.
The shop that suggested a junk yard isn't all that wrong. If there is a
way to test the part before hand, or at least thoroughly inspect it and
what it came out of, there is a good chance it will be silent when you
install it, since it probably wasn't the reason the car was junked.
There are times when I prefer a good used part to a newly "rebuilt"
one, and a third member is one I would consider under the right set of
circumstances and out of the right car.

No, I removed the 3rd member myself and handed it to them. I then
reinstalled it. I NEVER like leaving my precious car with mechanics
unless absolutely necessary.

If they rebuilt it, they may have adjusted something incorrectly, but a
good shop would not have released the car until the the work was right.
Did the owner of the shop test drive the car before you paid for it and
picked it up? There should be no sound from the differential.

The whine is power on only. It's always whined while I've had it. The
only thing left to whine is the R @ P. But I guess it's a shot in the
dark with a used one because the shop might think it looks good but it
might whine anyway.
Can someone tell me if the shop should have known by looking at the R @
P that it would whine? My original complaint was the whine.
Thx,
Chris

I don't think you ever stated, if the noise or whine is with power on,
power off, or coast. If it made the same sound before service, it was
probably repaired before and not set - up right. In that case the ring
and pinion would wear incorrectly, and make noise. If the service done
now, simply re-shimed to the old set-up, or possibly correct, the noise
will continue. Any adverse whine or noise is tell-tale premature ware.
If a used ring&pinion are installed, very careful set-up should be
done, or the same problem will exist, since the gears already have a
ware pattern set. The standard 2.76-2.94-3.23 should be whisper quiet.

It isn't suppose to make any noise.

Subject: IML: sure grip whine
Hi again all!Â
Â
Well, I just had my sure grip rebuilt because of a whine by a
reputable
rear end shop here. I took it out myself and handed it to them.
Replaced all bearings and clutches, but not the ring and pinion
because
it looked good to them. $540. worth all together. They showed me the
clutches and they were in terrible shape-broken and such so it needed
doing.Â
Â
Guess what, the whine is still there! The rebuilder drove in my car
and
said it's the ring and pinion. He was wondering if this might be the
nature of this beast? They said they'd be willing to drop in a used
ring for $150. more with no guarantees on the whine because it's
used.
I really don't want to sink more $ into this if I can help it for a
new
oneÂ
Â
What are your opinions about this possibly being normal and is there
any magic oil that might quiet it down a bit?(besides bananas?)Â
Anyone?Â
Â
Thx,Â
Chris StrohmeyerÂ
