Cleaning old lenses

About a week ago someone mentioned soaking some interior light lenses,
or backup light lenses in bleach to make them brighter, and someone
else mentioned that the bleach can make the plastic brittle.

What do people think about this:

Some computer geeks worked up the formula to clean old plastic
computer cases, but I guess it works for many kinds of plastic.  Looks
like the active ingredient is peroxide.
