cast  iron can be welded, though a drawback is that it supposedly is
so hard u cant do any maching to that spot.  in the side of a block it
might not matter.   yes only a real pro should tackle it.
 There is a stick callled Muggyweld that is made just for welding
cast iron with supposedly great results.   a google search under
Muggyweld  should bring it up
