Actually the start pickup was set at 8 BTDC on the B engines and was used
during crank only. As the engine lit off and the RPM increased at about
400 RPM the engine controller would switch over to the run pick which was
fixed on the plate at 45 BTDC. The engine controller then retarded the
timing to the correct amount of advance based on coolant temp, throttle
transducer position and vacuum. AF ratio was 17 to 18 to one. The 76
package performed well and had no egr, air pump or cats. In 77 the
standards changed and egr and air pump air switching and cats were added.
Also the torque converter stator ratio was changed from 1.99 to 1.76 if I
remember correctly. Its been a long time since I thought about our lean
burn cars.

Lean burn distributors have two pickup inside them. The ideal was, to
change the timing(crudely) to help with emissions, and starting.
The performance application, is to run a lean burn dist, and have the
system wired to be able to manually switch between the two pickups. One
pickup has the timing retarded, for instance, if you were running
nitrous, you could wire the retarded pickup to be activated with your
nitrous, thereby reducing the timing to prevent detonation, but alowing
a bigger shot of the spray.
There is also a starting benefit, but I dont recall the details. I
beleive it is running the advanced pickup to start the engine easier,
then switching over to the retarded pickup which is set at your desired
timing spec. I beleive this was for car with radical cams, but my
memeory is a bit vague.
But either way, if one were to use this type of set up, you would NOT
use the lean burn computer. This was the source of many runing/starting
issues with the lean burn cars. The computer tech wasnt up to the task
in the mid to late 70's. The pick ups in the lean burn dist look and
perform just like a std elec. dist, its just that there are two of them.
I think the pick ups are set either 4 or 8 degrees apart, I cant
remember. Its a cheap an effective way to retard or advance your timing
form inside the car. Its really a low tech way of doing it, I wouldnt
suggest it unless your combo requires it for reducing detonation.
Normally, a properly set up std elec. unit will do nearly all tasks
asked of it.
