It's time to discuss New York State's Queen CIty, Buffalo! Yes, yes, many folks who knew Buffalo back in the late 20th century would have labeled it a stop on the rust belt tour, but much has changed, and Buffalo has seen a rebirth!
My Dad worked 33 years at Bethlehem Steel's South Buffalo Railway, hauling steel for the Ford Stamping Plant and for distribution (my Grandfather also worked 34 years there). When the plant and many others closed, Buffalo went through a rough spell in the 1980's. But soon, companies started to recognize Buffalo's good labor market, temperate climate, ease of transportation access, waterfront and plentiful water supply, affordable housing, well I could go on and on. Today Buffalo is a vibrant mix of light industry, service businesses, health care providers, and friendly people!
We will be spending Thursday on the Buffalo Waterfront on a Miss Buffalo Boat Excursion, then the early afternoon at the Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum, as Buffalo was home to the manufacture of this prestigious automobile. The late afternoon is yours.
If you wish to make your own day or partial day in Buffalo, there are many stops and information that I have included in your meet packet activity list. Start with our splendid art-deco City Hall, built in 1931, which features elevator rides to the top, M-F from 8-4:30 PM. How about our famous and renowned Albright-Knox (AKG) Art Gallery? The Buffalo Zoo features our wonderful polar bears (they can thrive in a Buffalo August)! The Darwin Martin House is an exquisite Frank-Lloyd Wright designed treasure. Maybe you just want to relax at the Buffalo Riverworks, which is a reimagined former industrial area that features food, drink, and entertainment with a Buffalo River view. The Seneca-Buffalo Casino is a nice downtown establishment where you can try your luck on the tables. I trust you can check out some of these places early and see what suits you best, but you are more than welcome to write me if you have questions on anything mentioned, or that I neglected to mention.
But if you don't want to venture out on your own, why not join us on Sunday morning from 9:00 to 11:00! Jamie Hyde has organized a splendid 2 hour Big Red Double Decker Bus Tour that will take you around the City. Jamie has arranged a tour with Officer O'Connor, an 1800's Irish cop who will enlighten us in character,and supply facts of Buffalo you always wanted to know about! Load your car, check out of the hotel, and join us on-board promptly at 9 AM. We will return to the hotel around 11. The rate will be $30 per person that you pay at the bus when you board. Jamie will certainly cover the details at the meet.
Some facts about the bus: it is an imported 1985 Leyland Olympian which was in service in Wales, UK. After importing it, the roof was lowered 6 inches, and the lower level of seating was modified to add a door that allowed passengers to safely enter/exit on the curb side of the bus. The engine is a Cummins L-10, a straight 6-cylinder powerplant. Due to its age, repair is sometimes difficult, and it tops out at about 42 MPH on the highway, most definitely a high-speed conveyance! Maybe we will see you there!
