I'll second that. I'm a diver, and have seen lots of stuff well preserved
underwater, especially when it is fresh water. I would bet all of the
metal is preserved very well; much better than metal that is left out, gets
wet, and then is exposed to air.
Couldn't someone contact the manager of the club and just ask if there is
any truth to the rumor? If the answer is yes, then I would ask what the
membership requirements are. It would probably be worth it to join, just for
the adventure of it, or actually seeing it if it is there, regardless of
its condition.
Looking forward to hearing more on this.

If it is cold fresh water (less sunlight helps) it could be remarkably
intact. Go get it and let us know....the missing F. Of course if you get it
out it will need immediate conditioning and preserving not to mention
cleaning. Any suggestions:
I once had a BMW which possessed a secret desire to become a U-Boat. When
in the sixth floor UNDERGROUND safe parking garage. The Earthen street
bulkhead collapsed in a thunderstorm all the rainwater (normally going down the
drain) ran down (you guessed it) the lowest basement garage level. Just
where my classic BMW and 56 Bird where "safely parked". Through the efforts of
the EPA and the building; it took 12 weeks to pump out the water
repeatedly into one tanker truck (for safely disposing of the "contaminated water").
The cars were unusually well preserved by all the "pollutants" mixed in
the fresh water. They then both had a complete rebuild and were surprisingly
clean throughout even the engine when it came apart was shinny and clean. I
remember remarking it cleaned up like the dinner serving plates in a
dishwasher.....

I suppose anything is possible. however, with the way EPA (federal and
local) are about fluids and water contaminants, I am surprised they did not
make it be pulled from the water due to leaking fluids, rusting issues, etc.
Must be pretty rusty by now. If he put it in there after 20 years (1980),
then it has been in there another 32 years. Must be a reef by now.
Sincerely,
