I agree, the tube is not likely the problem.
However, for the not so quite purest, a hidden PVC would be an option.
A crafty person might manage to install a PCV valve in the Downdraft tube and run a hose up the back of the engine and into the back of the Air-cleaner. It could be almost invisible to the casual eye.
That way, all those fumes would be rebreathed like in later models. Better than having a crankcase blow up with the below fix!
The PVC was the first emissions device. as I remember.

A downdraft tube, on the passenger side valve cover, was used thru the early 60s. On a hot day with the windows open there can be a definite smell inside the car cabin dependent upon ambient conditions especially if there is a wind blowing or not and from what direction. Ask my wife with her unusually good sense of smell. She would tell you, she told me!
A PCV valve fixes that condition. Of course that would not be stock. The other option would be to replace the DDT with another oil breather cap. That caused a 300 Club member's engine to blow up on a newly rebuilt engine.
