Thanks, Rich, for the larification.
I remember using solder and soda bottle caps (less cork) to "nose" and "deck"
customized cars. It was a great time. One of those cars is still on the road.

Subject: Fat fenders and lead sleds
Fat fendered cars were typical of most all makes in the late 30’s-early 40’s.
The ’40 Ford is a prime example. In 1949, Fords, Mercury’s and Lincolns were
restyled with slab sides.
Any car that has had its bodywork extensively modified (especially like the
’49-51 Fords & Merc’s) can be referred to as a lead sled due to the large
amounts of lead used to cover and smooth the welding associated with chopping
the top, removing external trim, “Frenching” the headlights and taillights and
even sectioning and channeling the main body. Today, we use fiberglass and
Bondo.
I don’t see many auto body modifications on late-model cars, but custom paint
jobs, wheels, audio systems and air-bagged and slammed chassis seem to be the
choice of those that want their ride to be unique. For a terrible example,

Hi, Tom:
I believe the term, "lead sled' refers to the "fat fenders" cars of '49 to '51
Fords and Mercurys. Members: please correct if I am wrong.
