Hi Paul -
A half-dozen years ago, there was a white 55 C-300 for sale here in south
Florida with factory A/C which I saw up close. I'm no expert on the '55s, but it
was clearly a factory installation and was represented as such. It was a nice
runner, needing a cosmetic restoration.
Regards,
John Spiers

Subject: [Chrysler300] 1955/56 a/c I have one!
Re: 55 C300 a/c I own one of the 12 C300's built with factory air. It is
documented by the original build slip and original delivery papers. There are
air scoops on the rear fenders about even with the juncture of the rear window
and trunk deck. The bulk of the unit is in the trunk, hung behind the rear seat
under the rear window shelf. It is comprised of a large canister like body with
feeder tubes. The conditioned air is distributed directly through a vent
protruding from the center of the rear shelf. The cooling compressor is located
under the hood. The control unit is on the dash adjacent to the radio. When I
acquired the build slip for the car, it indicated factory a/c, which the
literature at my disposal indicated wasn't available. I sent an inquiry to
Chrysler's historical section and they passed me on to the Club, which provided
the information regarding prototype air being installed on 12 C300's. The a/c
was then an option on the 56. As I
remember, the person who assisted me from the club was George Lazenby. If anyone
has any questions about the original 55 a/c set up, please let me know. With the
exception of the compressor, which was pulled to remove the engine for
restoration, none of the other components have yet been disturbed and are
exactly as the factory installed them. I was unaware that any of the other 12
C300 air cars still existed! If anyone can provide any information about the
owners of the other two, I would be sincerely appreciative.
