Ground circuit is important. Voltage drop in ground circuit under load will limit current. Solenoid contacts inside starter and inhibitor/starter relay wherever it is located needs full power and if not contacts will arc and stick. This was a BIG problem BTW for Ford a number of years ago until they factory provided a dedicated ground wire for the fender liner mounted starter solenoid. Starter would engage and run til something gave up. Can also happen with any vehicle.
Also, for starter on a '55, these will stay engaged if solenoid stroke is not probably adjusted per manual. This could also happen with the subject starter if the lever stroke is not proper, is binding - - - -.
