{Chrysler 300} 1962 Shifter Cable Install

I have routed a new Shifter Cable from the Transmission Buttons down to the Transmission.

I have thoroughly read (and I believe understand) the step by step directions in the shop manual.

But….

I seem to not be getting it totally right.

I thought I had it today; but 1 & 2 would not stay depressed, though D, N & R would remain depressed.

Any helpful hints?

Or just try it again per the manuals step-by-step?

Right now the cable is loosely IN, though I have backed off the adjusting wheel until I try it again.
